What is a Knack?

A “knack” is a special talent, skill, ability, or trait. Our mission at Knack is to help you discover the unique combination of knacks that makes you who you are.

The way you play games can reveal a lot about you, and we have developed video games that are specially designed to discover your unique talents. Our team of scientists drew on the latest behavioral research to design and develop these games, and we have applied state-of-the-art data-mining technologies to massive data sets in order to validate and compute our knacks.

Does Knack really work? Can a video game really measure traits such as perseverance and fearlessness?

Games are an incredibly immersive and engaging experience, and playing a game can involve thousands of decisions and actions. Each of these decisions and actions reveals a little bit about you as a person, and when considered together, these decisions and actions can provide a powerful picture of who you are. Every one of our knacks is backed by state-of-the-art technology and rigorous science, and we are constantly refining and improving our system. We are proud of the work that we have done, and our system will only become more powerful and accurate as more and more people around the world play our games.

I don’t play video games. Will this affect which knacks I receive?

Knack measures how you play a game—the actions you take and the decisions you make—not your final score. Our validation studies show that gamers do not have an advantage over non-gamers when it comes to earning knacks.

Are older workers at a disadvantage when playing Knack’s games? What about women and other underrepresented groups?

Our algorithms are based on how people think and act, not their age, gender, religion, or ethnicity. Our data show that our algorithms are much less susceptible to bias than are traditional recruiting practices like interviews and references, and our validation studies show that older workers, women, and minority groups are not affected adversely when it comes to earning knacks.

What if someone “games” the game?

It is much easier to “game” a traditional interview or hiring process than it is to “game” a game. Playing a game involves thousands of decisions and actions, and our sophisticated data-mining algorithms look at many different characteristics of a person’s game play, some of which people are not even aware of.

Why did my Knacks change?

Our goal is to ensure your Knacks are always as accurate as possible. When you play a new level or game, we have more data to work with, so we update your Knacks.

Why didn’t I receive a knack for “X”?

At Knack, we believe that everyone has their own unique talents and strengths and that every job has its own requirements. People who receive any particular knack will be better in some jobs and worse in others. There could be many reasons for not earning a knack, and since knacks are intended to highlight what makes people special or different from others, no one is likely to ever receive all the knacks, or even most of them.

Why isn’t there a knack for “X”?

We are very excited about the knacks that we already have available, but we also know that our knacks only capture some aspects of human potential. We are constantly working to develop new knacks, and we would love to hear about the knacks that you would most like to see. Send us an email at any time.
